We asked them to define what it means to them especially as it relates to online advertising and in their own lives. Among the more than 50 interviews, a number of publishers participated including:

MEET THE TEAM
In each issue of The Pub, we interview a
different member of the ValueClick Media
team. This is what Bernie Romero
had to say:
Name: Bernie Romero
Role: Strategic Development Representative
|
 |
How long have you been with ValueClick Media and tell us about your current role?
I have been with ValueClick Media since 2001 in various publisher support roles. In December, I was promoted to my current position. As a Strategic Development Representative the primary objective is to maintain, manage and grow relationships with the exclusively represented sites within our network.
What are the top items you are focused on in your new role?
1. Meet with every strategic publisher partner to make sure we are aware of all revenue opportunities their sites offers and that they in turn are informed of all features ValueClick Media has to increase their revenue.
2. Ensure our sales teams are fully aware of what each strategic publisher partner has to offer to advertisers. This will help insure that, as new campaigns are loaded in the system. We are able to take advantage of the branding opportunities with these partners.
When working with publishers, how do you help them monetize their available inventory?
As soon as I begin a new publisher relationship I find out what the main goals are for their site(s). It is important to help set realistic goals for rate and banner fill while also providing an overview of how the ad serving technology and publisher interface works to optimize their revenue potential.
What do you think helps lead to success for a publisher when working with a network?
Understanding that both the bottom line eCPM and how much inventory we can fill is important for gauging the success of their account. Compare apples to apples and prioritize your network partners based on eCPM and you will see the most money being earned on your account.
Additionally, I always recommend close communication with the publisher support team or your account rep. prior to making any significant changes to your site. They can review and recommend changes/design ideas to ensure maximum revenue.
What is one interesting thing about you that most people don't already know?
I love to play volleyball. Even a past torn Achilles tendon could not stop me from getting back into the game. I play on a New York City league and our team recently swept our division tournament for first place, and ranked 2nd for the season. Middle Setter is my preferred position.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT
This issue we are again including two publishers. Here is what Sybil Grieb, Director of Business Development, of ZAM Network told us.

Tell us about your site.
ZAM Network is the largest Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) game network in the U.S. with over 700MM monthly page views across Thottbot, Wowhead, Allakhazam, MMOInterface and Online Gaming Radio. We target the male 18-39 demographic, providing database information (think Google for gamers), maps, tools and community for over ten of the top MMO games.
How has ValueClick Media affected your business and/or business goals?
With over 700MM impressions per month we rely, in part, on strong alternative revenue streams. When we brought ValueClick Media into our network chain over a year ago, they significantly increased our month end revenue. ValueClick Media remains one of our strongest performing networks for both our U.S. and international traffic, with high CPMs, consistent fill and excellent client service. They give us the ability to set minimum CPMs on a per tag basis and to default to multiple other networks which is especially important when testing smaller networks.
What account feature do you find the most valuable when viewing your ValueClick Media account?
As we work to optimize our sites for advertising, the drill down detail of revenue by site and by ad size has been invaluable.
What advice can you give other ValueClick Media publishers looking to maximize their ad revenue? Most networks optimize best when you send them consistent traffic; however it is important to test how they perform at various levels.
We also spoke with Susan Beasley of PrimaryGames.com
Tell us about your site.
PrimaryGames.com is a site for teachers, parents and kids featuring free educational games, coloring pages, interactive e-books, holiday activities, musical postcards, crafts and more. The site was started in 2000 and has become one of the top destinations for kids on the Internet. Our site provides a safe place where kids can have fun while learning and features games in language arts, math, science and social studies.
How has ValueClick Media affected your business and/or business goals?
ValueClick Media has helped us monetize our traffic by providing high quality advertisers. We have been with ValueClick Media since early on and have watched them grow as we have grown. ValueClick Media's high fill rate and eCPMs have had a large impact on our site's ad revenue.
What account feature do you find the most valuable when viewing your ValueClick Media account?
Since our site is primarily for children we must carefully screen all content before it is shown on the site. ValueClick Media's publisher interface allows to us to screen and select ads before they go live.
What advice can you give other ValueClick Media publishers looking to maximize their ad revenue?
We've found that we have had higher fill and pay rates when we cap the number of ad views seen by each user. By capping the views shown we are able to spread our visitors across all of the ad networks we utilize. We are able to generate higher revenues by sending each network more unique users versus more ad impressions.
